It’s been ten months, a couple of days and 200 cups of coffee since I became a member of The Perk family. When I realized I was going to be an Administrative Assistant in the specialty coffee industry, I had a couple of fears and expectations. There was living in a new place, interacting and working with new people from different parts of the world and operating in an industry that was new to me. Driven by a desire to become the best at what I do, with the help of the owner, Mr. Faisal, and four crazy baristas, I have found a home in Ras Al Khaimah.
In addition to dealing with suppliers, stock taking and Accounting. If you are reading this, I believe you are a coffee lover and have interacted with a barista once, twice or a couple hundred times. They are the most interesting people I have met. Picture a comedian, an artist, a life coach and a scientist rolled into one. One minute the café is a comedy club, the next minute they are perfecting a drink, new latte art or trying to be perky with new drinks, and before you know it, one person is bursting in song and missing all the notes. The icing on the cake, (speaking of cake, our San Sebastian cheesecake is to die for) is our customers who brighten our day. It’s common to hear a customer saying, ‘you have made my day’, but they sometimes don’t realize it goes both ways. They have become part of our family which keeps growing day by day.

The Specialty Coffee Industry, all over the world and here in the United Arab Emirates is growing at a very fast rate. We are witnessing establishment a-lot of new specialty coffee shops in Ras Al Khaimah every month. This is an indication of the growth of the coffee community. People are starting to make coffee consumption a part of their everyday life. For the coffee lovers it becomes a new journey to find the best blend, to try out different beans and the different methods of brewing coffee. The journey to the perfect cup becomes as interesting as the destination itself. This poses a challenge to us as The Perk Café, which we gladly accept, to keep up our standards in providing the best coffee and being consistent while at it. The response we are getting is excellent and it makes me happy to be playing a part in the growth of The Perk Cafe.

I find it difficult to imagine working anywhere else. It started with being tricked to drink Iced V60 at 10pm and not sleeping that night to today when I am perfecting my tulip latte art (when is the next latte art competition? asking for a friend). It has been a roller coaster of a journey for the past few months and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Join me at The Perk Café for a daily dose of espresso, because we need to get through the day, by any beans necessary.
